It is not known where this head of a young man was carved, nor are there any indications of his identity. The head may well have formed part of a full-length figure and it was certainly carved to be seen from all sides. The hint of a smile on the face is a feature of the growing sense of individuality found in Roman portraiture. Heads such as this have been much prized by collectors and artists since the renaissance. Typically, they would have been restored and displayed in a special gallery with other antique marbles.   This object is part of "Scan The World".
